Rovaniemi in spring: what to do in March and April ?

Rovaniemi in spring, when the snow slowly melts away, giving rise to a landscape quite different from the white of postcard scenes… During this season, the weather remains changeable: some years, snow still lingers along the riverbanks and in the forests, while in others, it disappears quickly, making way for the first signs of renewal.

But no need to worry! We have put together a selection of local and unique activities to enjoy in Rovaniemi that will make your stay memorable, even when the snow is scarce. Adapting to your surroundings is the key to fully embracing the Arctic experience…

1. WATCH THE NORTHERN LIGHTS

You may have seen them online, heard about them, and they’re probably on your bucket list… the Northern Lights in Rovaniemi!

As the nights remain long and dark, expect the auroras to bring a magical glow to the sky. However, this natural phenomenon depends on several factors, the most important being the weather. Believe it or not, aurora hunters don’t like snowfall! Clear or partly clear skies, along with dry conditions, offer the best chances to witness the Northern Lights. Weather in Lapland can change very quickly, so be prepared to venture outside Rovaniemi to reach the most promising viewing spots.

Discover our Northern Lights experiences in Rovaniemi:
Aurora Pass: Book 3 nights or more at a discounted rate and increase your chances of seeing the auroras. This pass allows you to try again if needed, explore different locations each evening, and take advantage of the best weather conditions.
Family Tour (3h): A gentle experience, perfectly suited for children
Private Tour (3h30): A vehicle and guide exclusively for you
Premium Tour (6h): A private experience, with optional dinner (salmon soup)

2. HIKE TO THE KOROUMA CANYON AND ITS FROZEN WATERFALLS

Hiking is a must in Rovaniemi, even in spring. As the snow melts, vegetation gradually emerges and rivers begin to flow, creating ever-changing landscapes with shifting light.

Depending on conditions, hikes can be done on foot, with crampons, or on snowshoes. Choosing a guided tour allows you to learn about local flora and fauna, discover unique spots, and fully enjoy the long late-winter days.

For a more challenging adventure, explore the famous Korouoma Canyon, accessible from Rovaniemi and still quite snowy in spring. At this time of the year, the hiking trail is particularly icy, so sturdy crampons are essential to safely traverse some sections and admire the waterfalls, which remain largely frozen. The route is approximately 5 km, takes about two hours, and finishes with a cozy lunch by the fire.

3. HIKE TO THE AMETHYST MINE & PYHÄ-LUOSTO NATIONAL PARK

For a truly unique experience, embark on a guided hike to the amethyst mine nestled in the hills of Pyhä-Luosto National Park. This spring excursion combines wilderness hiking with the discovery of one of Europe’s most remarkable sites.

On-site, you can learn about the geological formation of amethysts, dig your own gemstone, and enjoy breathtaking views over the vast boreal forests. Pyhä-Luosto National Park is defined by its tunturi mountain range, offering impressive landscapes that you won’t find in the Rovaniemi area.

4. EXPERIENCE THE FINNISH SAUNA

You can’t visit Finland without trying a sauna! A cornerstone of local culture, with nearly three million saunas for just five million inhabitants. The sauna is much more than a moment of relaxation: it’s a way of life. In Finland, people go to recharge, reflect, or even make important decisions. So why not start your Rovaniemi trip with a sauna to plan the rest of your itinerary?

The traditional wood-heated Finnish sauna combines intense heat with plunges into cold water, a contrast that offers numerous benefits for both body and mind. Even if it’s your first time, don’t worry: your guide will explain each step and accompany you through this unique experience.

From Rovaniemi, we offer an intimate nature sauna experience in an exceptional setting:

Outdoor nature sauna session: Immerse yourself in the magical ambiance of a sauna deep in the forest. If the weather is favorable in the evening, you may even see the Northern Lights dancing above the lake.

The experience takes place in a genuine traditional wooden sauna by the lakeside, with a dock for the brave who want to try the cold water plunge. A moment of complete disconnection, far from everything, right in the heart of Lapland.

5. MEET ARCTIC ANIMALS: VISIT A REINDEER FARM

Get up close with the iconic reindeer of Lapland! Even though sleigh rides become more difficult due to the lack of snow, you can still visit a local, authentic reindeer farm near Rovaniemi.

Here, you’ll learn about the lifestyle of reindeer herders and have the chance to interact with these fascinating animals, including hand-feeding them. Off-season visits offer a quieter, more intimate experience, allowing you to enjoy the farm at a relaxed pace.

6. VISIT RANUA WILDLIFE PARK

Most Arctic animals are very difficult to spot in the wild, especially in winte. They can hear, see, and smell you long before you even notice them! Don’t miss your (probably) once-in-a-lifetime chance to meet the wildlife of the Far North at Ranua Wildlife Park.

Located about an hour’s drive from Rovaniemi, Ranua Zoo is the northernmost wildlife park in the world. Here, you can observe polar bears, Arctic foxes, wolves, wolverines, lynxes, birds of prey, otters, and more. A 2.5 km easy trail takes you through the forest from animal to animal, giving the feeling of immersion in their natural environment. Even without snow, the park retains its charm, and you may even spot the animals more easily in their expansive enclosures.

Opt for a guided excursion from Rovaniemi to Ranua Wildlife Park. Our small-group guided tour includes transport, entry tickets, a buffet lunch at the Ranua restaurant, and commentary from your guide.

7. EXPLORE ROVANIEMI AND ITS SURROUNDINGS BY BIKE

Looking for adventure and a way to explore the area around Rovaniemi? With snow becoming scarce, snowmobile excursions are not always guaranteed, as they depend on sufficient snow cover.

As an alternative, try an electric fatbike ride, just as adventurous, for discovering the region and its surrounding landscapes.

Equipped with wide tires, e-fatbikes handle all types of terrain, including icy and snowy paths. Don’t worry about slippery trails, the tires are designed for Arctic conditions and ensure a safe and enjoyable ride.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced cyclist, there’s an experience suited to your level. Options include Arctic forest rides that lead to scenic viewpoints. Independent travelers can also rent e-fatbikes at very reasonable prices.

8. ICE FISHING IN ROVANIEMI

Ice fishing has been a part of Far North culture for centuries. Traditionally, it was one of the few ways to secure food during the harsh winter months. Today, many Finns still enjoy sitting on a frozen lake for hours, trying to catch their lunch while relaxing. Why not give it a try too?

This unique experience is generally available until early April (depending on the year), before the ice on lakes and rivers becomes too dangerous due to melting.

Introductory Ice Fishing Tour (3h): Learn traditional techniques with a guide : how to drill your own hole, handle the line, and practice patience like a true Nordic fisherman. It’s both relaxing and authentic.
Complete Arctic Adventure: Combine snowshoeing, ice fishing, orientation skills, and basic survival lessons, including fire-making. This experience is also available as a private tour and is perfect for families.
Scenic Fishing Spot: One excellent location is right next to our panoramic sauna, on the edge of a crystal-clear river. Pike and perch are abundant, a great chance to test your fishing skills while waiting for the sauna to warm up. And who knows, you might enjoy your catch by the fire after a well-earned session of Nordic heat!

9. DISCOVER LOCAL CULTURE

Overcast days are perfect for museum visits! The Arktikum Museum, located on the banks of the Ounasjoki River, is a must-see in Rovaniemi, whether it’s snowy or not. You’ll likely be amazed by the museum’s richness and diversity, covering the broad theme of “life in the Arctic”: Sámi culture, Arctic fauna and flora, Finnish history, the Northern Lights, and climate change.

If you enjoy museums, consider purchasing the cultural pass, which gives access to Rovaniemi’s three main museums: Arktikum, Pilke Museum (Forest & Nature), and Korundi House of Culture (Contemporary Art). The pass can be bought at any of these three locations.

Alternatively, immerse yourself in local traditions with our unique Finnish Legends Evening by the Fire. Around a crackling fire, ancient tales transport you through time, revealing the essence of Nordic culture, traditions, and Northern life. Enjoy pancakes cooked over an open fire while listening to the captivating stories shared by your guide.

Rovaniemi is world-famous as the official hometown of Santa Claus. A visit to Santa Claus Village is a must, even if the magic feels slightly different without snow. Access to the village and its many shops is free, but a photo with Santa himself comes at a fee.

Getting to Santa Claus Village is easy: by taxi, city bus (No. 8), or electric fatbike, which lets you enjoy the scenic cycling path along the way !
