WHEN TO TRAVEL TO LAPLAND?

Lapland is a destination that fascinates travellers all year round. Much of Lapland lies above the Arctic Circle, this magical region of Finland offers wildly different experiences depending on the season — from endless daylight in summer to snowy wonderlands in winter. Choosing when to visit Lapland depends on what kind of adventure you’re looking for. Here’s a guide to the best times of the year to plan your trip and why each season has its own charm.

1. SUMMER IN LAPLAND: MIDNIGHT SUN ADVENTURES

From late May to early August, Lapland experiences exceptionally bright nights. In Rovaniemi, the official Midnight Sun period lasts approximately from early June to early July, when the sun remains above the horizon throughout the night. Farther north, the phenomenon lasts longer. Summer temperatures in Rovaniemi are often around 15–25°C during the day, although cooler, warmer and rainy periods are also possible.

Make the most of these endless days by joining unique summer tours! You can glide across peaceful lakes and rivers on a canoe tour, hike through untouched Arctic landscapes (and pick berries, like locals do!), or explore forest trails on an e-fatbike. Doing these activities during the evening, when the sun hovers above the horizon, is an unforgettable experience. Summer is also the ideal time for families who want to combine adventure with cultural visits to reindeer and husky farms, or to spend a day at Ranua Wildlife Park.

2. AUTUMN IN LAPLAND: RUSKA COLOURS AND AURORAS

September usually brings the famous ruska season, when Lapland’s forests and ground vegetation turn vibrant shades of red, yellow and orange. The colours generally appear earlier in northern Lapland and later around Rovaniemi, but their exact timing varies each year. The air becomes cooler, yet conditions are often comfortable for hiking and exploring Finnish nature.

It’s also the start of the Northern Lights season. The nights grow darker, giving you a chance to join an aurora hunting tour before the heavy snows arrive. For photographers and nature lovers, autumn is one of the most peaceful and visually stunning times to visit Lapland.

Another highlight of autumn is the chance to meet Lapland’s iconic animals. From Rovaniemi, you can join a unique two-day trip to Oulanka National Park, combining hiking with an overnight bear watching tour in a wildlife hide. It’s also the season when the first husky cart rides begin, giving you the chance to experience dog mushing on wheels before the snow arrives and to learn more about these energetic Arctic dogs.

3. WINTER IN LAPLAND: SNOW, AURORAS, AND ARCTIC ADVENTURES

Winter conditions develop gradually across Lapland. The first snow may arrive in October, but it does not always remain on the ground, particularly around Rovaniemi. For travellers looking for more reliable snow and a complete selection of winter activities, December to March is generally the safest period. Farther north, winter normally begins earlier and lasts longer.

The darkest period occurs around December and January. In northernmost Lapland, the sun remains below the horizon for several weeks during the polar night. Around Rovaniemi, daylight is very limited and consists largely of beautiful Arctic twilight. From January onwards, the days gradually become longer, while March offers an excellent combination of snow and daylight. January and February can be extremely cold, with temperatures occasionally falling below –30°C. March and early April are generally brighter and often milder, although cold weather remains possible.

Our agency in Rovaniemi and Ylläs offers a wide variety of guided winter tours. You can try snowshoeing or ski tours, including special night excursions designed to combine activity with aurora chasing. These tours are also a wonderful way to discover Lapland’s snow-loaded trees, sometimes associated with the Finnish phenomenon known as tykky. Thick snow and frost transform the spruces and pines into striking Arctic sculptures.

If you want to increase your opportunities to see the Northern Lights, our Aurora Pass allows you to join excursions on at least three nights. Spending several nights searching gives you more opportunities to encounter clear skies and favourable conditions, although an aurora sighting can never be guaranteed.

For adventurers, winter is also the season of ice fishing and our unique Arctic survival experience, which combines snowshoeing, navigation, fire-making, and fishing on a frozen lake. Families and animal lovers can visit authentic reindeer and husky farms as well as the Ranua Wildlife Park, while cultural tours remain available year-round, including our popular wilderness sauna tour and the guided visit to the Arctic SnowHotel.

For those seeking a fully immersive experience, we also offer an exclusive one-week package in Ylläs National Park. This private experience includes accommodation in cozy wooden chalets, airport transfers, and a personal guide who will take care of every detail of your Arctic holiday.

4. SO, WHEN SHOULD YOU VISIT LAPLAND?

The truth is, there is no bad time to travel to Lapland — it all depends on what you want to experience. Summer brings the magic of the Midnight Sun and endless outdoor adventures. Autumn offers peaceful and colorful landscapes as well as the first Northern Lights. Winter is perfect for snowy activities and family holidays.

Keep in mind that late April and May form a transition between winter and summer, particularly around Rovaniemi. Some winter activities may have ended before summer experiences begin, and snow conditions can change quickly. However, winter and spring skiing activities may continue later in northern Lapland and at higher-altitude destinations. Always check the conditions and activity availability for your specific destination. Whatever time you choose to visit, our local agency in Rovaniemi and Ylläs is here to help you create unforgettable memories.

Below, you will find our visual guide to help you decide when to visit different destinations across Finnish and Swedish Lapland. Seasonal conditions vary considerably between Rovaniemi, Ylläs, Saariselkä, Utsjoki, Kilpisjärvi and Kiruna. As we say in the North, you should always come twice: once for the snow and once for the snow-free season!
