We will depart from Rovaniemi in small groups of up to 8 participants. Your guide chooses and drive in the most promising locations bbased on careful weather analysis before the tour starts. We will stop as many times as needed to regularly check the sky, discover more of Lapland landscapes and take pictures (no limit)!

TRY AS MANY NIGHTS AS YOU WANT

Key to observing and enjoying the Northern lights is not about driving hundreds of kilometers on icy roads, or coming back late in the middle of the night, like most companies would try to convince you. The key to enjoying auroras is patience, persistence and perseverance! Try as much as possible, to increase your chance, skip the least promising nights (really, who wants to drive 6 hours in a snowstorm without any safety?). Decide to go only when the forecast looks good.

Our Aurora Pass lets you join the tour on multiple nights at a low price. Each morning, you get a detailed weather report to help you decide if you want to go out that night – you don’t waste your time and can better enjoy your holidays! If conditions are not good, you get other nights to try!

THE BEST VALUE

This Aurora Pass is the best value for photography tour in Rovaniemi. It offers you the highest chance to observe auroras at the least effort and with the highest safety standards! We require that you book for 3 consecutive nights but you may join even more nights for the discounted price of 75€/night : reserving your seats as many night as possible increase your possibility of observation, and allows you to choose the best night if you want to go only once! Naturally, you may join every night as well!

You may also book one single night at the very last minute (reservations are open only 48hours before) when conditions are predictable, but this will be only possible if we have availability – which happens very rarely in winter season. We therefore recommend to book the Aurora Pass long in advance!

 MAXIMISE YOUR CHANCES

The observation of Northern lights require knowledge and expertise, but mostly a certain amount of patience and perseverance, and unfortunately a bit of luck too. There is no “best chance” but trying hard. By repeating the experience, you not only increase your chance of observation, but also get the opportunities to experience different types of Northern Lights, with different intensity or colors

We understand that you are on holidays, and want to enjoy your holidays. Many companies in Rovaniemi offer unlimited mileage for their aurora hunting tours (with sometimes “guaranteed” northern lights). In reality, ir can mean that you might be trapped for the entire night and forced to be transported throughout Lapland for hours, without many breaks, to finally find some faint northern lights in Norway… So yes, you might see some auroras in the end. But in our opinion, it does not make sense to drive hundreds of kilometres (on icy roads with a tired driver!) and spend all night in a packed minivan, while you could enjoy the comfort of your hotel room, and simply join the tour the following evening when the aurora forecast around Rovaniemi is much more promising! Think about your comfort and – most importantly – your safety

COMFORT & SAFETY

We believe there’s a better way. With our Aurora Pass, you enjoy at least three nights of aurora hunting, under realistic conditions, with a local guide who values your comfort and well-being. All for a similar price, but with far more value, peace of mind, and chances to create beautiful memories.

BASED ON WEATHER & FORECASTS

The most important factor to observe the Northern Lights is the weather. Whether you are re in Rovaniemi or anywhere else, you will need a clear or partly clear sky to see the auroras.

Before each tour, we carefully analyse the latest weather maps, forecasts and charts to choose the most promising spots and plan our Northern Lights trip. Even if it is cloudy in Rovaniemi, there is still good chance to see some Northern lights if you know where to go.

And we can promise you: we will always honestly inform you about the forecast conditions and the chance of observing the Northern lights. If the conditions are not promising, we will inform you so you do not waste your evening if you do not want to. Some guests prefer to give it a shot no matter what, and we of couse respect that. In all cases, we will do everything we can to make the experience safe, enjoyable, and meaningful, even if the lights remain hidden. At least you’ll know exactly what to expect.

PHOTOS CAPTURED FOR YOU

Your guide is always equipped with a professional camera, specifically designed for low-light and night photography. For us, this is essential. Why is the camera so important? Because it can capture more light than the human eye. This helps us detect even the faintest aurora activity early on and anticipate changes in the sky. It’s a valuable tool that helps us make better decisions during the tour.

And of course, you’ll want to remember the moment! All photos taken by your guide will be shared with you in high quality via email, so you can relive the experience and share it with others.

BAD WEATHER? WE INFORM, YOU DECIDE

Unlike many companies in Rovaniemi, we will inform you about the realistic chance to see auroras. Every day, we send you our clear and easy-to-understand report. Our team will provide you will all scientific and weather data about the conditions for the night, so you make your decision to join or not until the last moment. And because your seats are reserved for at least 3 consecutive nights (or more! if you want to increase your chance), you can join any time you feel it is worth it.

Our Aurora Pass is the best way if you want to increase your chances to spot auroras

We rarely cancel a tour unless the weather is unsafe. Instead, we happily keep you fully invofrmer our about the realistic conditions, the best areas where we can drive and other conditions. Why? Because some of our guests have travelled from very far, and are usually willing to take their chance. And it is true: even with challenging weather, we may catch some Northern Lights. Plus, the adventure of hunting auroras in dark, cold and peaceful wilderness of Lapland is a magical experience in itself.

Whether you want to go every night or only on the most promising ones, the choice is yours. We aree here to guide, advise, and help make your dream of seeing the Northern Lights come true.

ABOUT YOUR AURORA HUNTERS

All our guides are experienced and have spent a lot of time exploring the immensity of Lapland, discovering new locations and learing how to read the sky. They are true Aurora enthusiasts with years of experience exploring the vast wilderness of Lapland. And of course, they will always be very happy to share with you their knowledge and passion about local nature!

When it comes to Northern Lights hunting, we work as a team. We analyse the weather forecast together and discuss about the best directions to explore. We collaborate to cover large areas, and stay in constant communication throughout the night. By spreading out across different areas and sharing real-time updates, we increase our chances of finding clear skies and making sure you get the best chance to see the Northern Lights.

GO FOR THE EXPERIENCE!

As we usually tell our guests before we start the trip: don’t go for the Northern Lights, go for the experience! There’s something truly special about stepping into the dark, quiet wilderness of Lapland, surrounded by snow, stars, and the thrill of chasing the unknown.

The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, and unfortunately, we can never promise you will see them. No matter how hard we try, no matter of the decisions we take or the distance we drive, sometimes we also need a bit of luck. Northern Lights are an unpredictable phenomenon, and despite our long experience, there is unfortunately nothing we can do if Mother Nature decides not to offer us auroras… This is also the beauty about the Northern lights and we all have to accept it.

If you are rather reluctant to spend a lot of time in a minivan for nothing (because yes, that’s a risk!), we then recommend our snowshoeing adventure by night. This tour takes you into the peaceful snowy forests, about an hour from Rovaniemi. It’s a great way to enjoy the Arctic night, with the chance to see the auroras from beautiful viewpoint. And, even if they don not appear, the hike itself is a rewarding and memorable experience.

TRAVELING WITH KIDS? CONTACT US FIRST

Chasing the Northern Lights in winter can be a demanding experience. Going for a Northern lights hunt in winter sometimes means driving for hours and/or having to wait until late in the extreme cold. Temperatures may drop to -30°C, and it is common that we come back to Rovaniemi only after midnight! Moreover, the best spots to observe the horizon are usually the most exposed to the wind (frozen lakes, hilltops…)!

As you may understand, an Aurora Borealis tour in Winter is not adapted to young kids. It can easily become unconfortable, or even unsafe. For this reason, we do not accept children under 8 years old on this experience.

If you are travelling with younger children, we reccommend our special Northern Lights family tour with photos. This experience is specially designed for families with kids of 4 to 8 years old.

We will discreetly help you plan a meaningful moment and can suggest some thoughtful touches to make the experience even more memorable. And your guide will also be ready to capture the moment with his camera!

But remember! Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon and can never be guaranteed, but we always do our best to make the experience worth it.

For this reason, we recommend booking the Aurora Pass, which offers much better value for a Northern Lights photography tour in Rovaniemi.

With the Aurora Pass, your seat is reserved for at least 3 consecutive nights. You can then join the tour on any of those nights, or all of them!, depending on the weather forecast and your energy level. The more nights you try, the higher your chances of seeing the Northern Lights. The price with the Aurora Pass is only 75€/night, and you may also add extra nights if desired. If you would like to alternate with other night experiences, such as snowshoeing by night, wilderness sauna, or a Finnish legends & tales night,  just contact our team at info@nordicodyssey.net and we will help create a custom itinerary for you.

A minimum of two paying adults is required for the tour to operate. Solo travelers are welcome to join any confirmed departure at the standard rate or contact us to arrange a private tour (extra charges apply).

Children under 12 years old benefit from a discounted rate. However, children under 8 years old are not allowed on this tour for safety reasons, especially in winter when conditions can be very harsh. Families with younger children should book our Northern Lights Family Tour. In autumn, exceptions may be made for children under 8, but please contact us before booking to confirm.

Please dress appropriately according to the weather, with warm clothes, good winter boots, gloves, hats and thick socks. You may rent professional winter overalls and winter boots for an extra cost of 5€/set/night.

The starting time on your ticket is indicative only. You will receive a final schedule before your tour based on the latest weather and aurora forecasts. The departure time may be adjusted by ±1 hour to increase your chances.

A certain amount of walking may be involved. This tour is not recommended for pregnant travelers, for people with heart conditions or with limited mobility.
