What to do in Rovaniemi when there is no chance for Northern Lights?

No matter how hard you try or how far you drive, Northern lights are not always observable. Poor weather, such as heavy clouds or snowfalls, prevents the observation of this majestic phenomenon. So don’t waste your money or evening for an experience that is guaranteed unsucessful! Instead, we present here some valuable options to save your evening and offer great memories of Lapland when the aurora conditions are not promising at all!

YOUR ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS TO A BAD AURORA NIGHT…

Most companies in Rovaniemi will try to convince you to go for their Northern lights tours even when there is obviously no chance of observing auroras, insisting that “Northern Lights are an unpredictable natural phenomenon”. Sure, no-one can guarantee the observation of Northern lights as it depends on many natural factors. But one can clearly tell when there is no chance due to snowfalls or heavy cloudy sky! Indeed, a bad weather will greatly limit your chance, and that’s something you can forecast (and so can those greedy companies)!

We will always be honest with you. In order to offer the best services on our famous Northern Lights Photography Hunting tours, we send our guests a complete report every morning about our assessment for the night. And when the chance for aurora observation is extremely low, we tell the truth too. In that case, many alternative options are available so you don’t waste your evening or your money! Let’s introduce each of them…

OPTION 1 : RESCHEDULE YOUR TOUR

That’s the first option we would recommend. We understand that observing the Northern Lights is a dream, and that’s probably the reason why you booked a specialised aurora hunting tour. If tonight is not the night, why not tomorrow? or any another night that has a more promising forecast!

Obviously rescheduling depends on your availability, and that’s the reason why we always advise to book as early as possible during your stay : this way, you get more options to reschedule. Don’t wait for the last night to hunt the Northern lights, because it would then be your only night…

If you booked our Northern Lights Photography Hunting tour, please note that rescheduling is free of charge! You just need to request it before 14.00 to our team by email to info@nordicodyssey.net. Of course, rescheduling is subject to our availability for the new night (and in peak season, we are easily fully booked) as we want to keep our groups small…

OPTION 2 : JOIN A SNOWSHOE ADVENTURE

Even without Northern lights, our Winter wonderland is still worth exploring! Our snowshoeing adventure is designed to offer an evening outdoor activity to nature-lovers, with the chance to enjoy the aurora show when the conditions are good. The guide takes you in very small groups to some remote nature areas with no light pollution – usually in the direction where better weather is predicted to increase the chance.

Indeed, when the sky is clear, we usually get to see some arches dancing over the snowy trees as we walk into a white and dark paradise. And when the weather is terrible for Northern lights observation, the snowshoe adventure takes even more sense, offering a memorable adventure by night in the glooming beauty of nature. Much better than wasting your evening in a hotel room!

This is definitely the option we would recommend to all nature enthusiasts. And who knows? There might be some unexpected surprise, with a clearing in the sky and a Northern lights appearing against all odds…

If you booked our Northern Lights Photography Hunting tour and are willing to switch for the snowshoeing adventure due to unpromising weather conditions, please note that we would refund you the price difference between the two activities.

OPTION 3 : JOIN A SKI TREK ADVENTURE

This backcountry ski tour by night is similar in many aspects to our snowshoeing adventure by night, but it is operated… on skis!

Ski touring is an easy ski discipline designed to let you glide on deep snow off the beaten tracks or groomed trails. The backcountry skis (called in Finnish, “sliding snowshoes”) are equipped with a skin allowing to both hike uphill and slide downhill ; they are equally used for long Arctic expeditions or shorter day tours into wild nature. They are the perfect equipment to get to beautiful elusive places that you cannot reach with cars or on foot.

Ski trekking requires a little bit more of confidence and body balance than standard snowshoeing. The age limit is also from 12 years old. The adventure is indeed designed for participants who have a taste for a gentle adventure or are willing to enjoy an outdoor activity with a bit of technique. However, it is not required at all to be an experienced skier to enjoy this tour!

If you booked our Northern Lights Photography Hunting tour and are willing to switch for the ski trekking adventure due to unpromising weather conditions, please note that we would refund you the price difference between the two activities.

OPTION 4 : RELAX IN A WILDERNESS SAUNA WITH ICE SWIMMING

There is nothing more Finnish than a Finnish sauna! Sauna is part of the local culture in many aspects, and therefore a must-do experience when coming to Lapland. Saunas are deeply ingrained in Finnish culture, and no trip to Lapland is complete without experiencing one. The traditional Finnish sauna involves going into a hot, dry room and sweating intensely for a short period of time, before cooling down in cold water. This practice became a hobby for many locals and is to be known as very good for the skin and the immune system.

No matter of the cloudy weather, enjoying a private evening in a traditional wilderness sauna will turn an unpromising aurora hunt into a memorable moment with your loved ones! The sauna is located in a remote area with no light pollution, which still offers great chance for Northern lights observation in case the sky would open for a bit…

If you booked our Northern Lights Photography Hunting tour and are willing to switch for the wilderness log sauna evening, the change is free-of-charge (there might be a price difference though). The sauna tour is always private for more intimacy so you should request the change as early as possible!

OPTION 5 : LEARN ABOUT LOCAL CULTURES

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of local cultures with our unique Finnish Legends and Tales Night Around the Fire. Around a crackling fire, ancient tales will transport you back in time, revealing the essence of Nordic cultures, traditions and life in the North. Enjoy pancakes cooked over the open fire while listening to your guide’s captivating tales.

This cultural evening tour is designed to offer a priviledged peaceful moment in company of your knowlodgeable guide who will take their time to share about the cultures in the Far North, local habits, important historical events of Rovaniemi, Finnish art & litterature, indigenous communities, and some other delicious anecdotes… This is the perfect tour to learn about the places you are or will be visiting, but also find answers to many questions that might have popped in your mind while wandering in Rovaniemi streets… So, let’s seize the opportunity to change an unsucessful aurora evening into an enriching cultural exchange!

If you booked our Northern Lights Photography Hunting tour and are willing to switch for the Finnish Legends & Tales Night around the Fire, please note that we would refund you the price difference between the two activities. This cultural tour may be organised either in English or in French languages.

OPTION 6 : SWITCH FOR A DAYTIME TOUR

Maybe you just don’t want to waste your money and would rather join a daytime tour instead of paying a small fee to cancel your Northern light tour. This option is of course possible too, but will mostly depend on how tight your holiday schedule is. Take contact with our office team to check what tours are still available to join, so you may have a chance to change your Northern lights tour for it (price difference will then be adjusted).

We especially recommend a hike into Korouoma Canyon with its majestic frozen waterfalls, a guided e-fatbike trip through the snowy forests or full arctic adventure that combines snowshoe hiking with orienteering, ice-fishing and fire-making. Other tours such as reindeer farm experiences, snowmobile safaris or husky sleigh rides are usually fully booked on a last-minute request, but who knows? Maybe there’s a memorable adventure waiting for you, just not at the exact time you planned it!

If you would like to change your Northern Lights Photography Hunting tour for a daytime tour, please contact our office team who will be happy to present you the different options available. Price adjustment will then be operated, between the price you have already paid and the price of the new activity.

OPTION 7 : TRY YOUR LUCK NO MATTER WHAT

Most of our guests are still willing to go for the aurora hunt, even though the conditions are not promising at all. Why?

The main reason is to have no regret : it is better to go and try, no matter of the result, rather than giving up already before starting. Indeed, the weather is difficult to predict in Lapland due to various factors and climates, and some localised gaps sometimes randomly appear in a cloudy sky. What if this happens tonight against all odds?

Another reason is to live an experience : you have come from very far with the dream to see the northern lights. Even if the conditions are not good, it is still a true adventure to step into the dark nights of the Arctic in search of some magic in the sky! In addition, your guide will make sure to provide as much explanation and fun as possible, so you learn about the phenomenon even if you don’t witness it with your own eyes. Based on their tips and good advice, you will be better prepared to plan your next aurora trip and optimise your chance, whteher it is in Lapland or Norway, Iceland or any other arctic region.

When you book our Northern Lights Photography Hunting tour, we send you in the morning of your tour a honest detailed report to inform you about the conditions and our estimation for the night. You then have all cards in hands to decide whether you want to try or not. Please note that the guides need to prepare the tour, the route and their equipment, so after 14.00 (local time), we assume that you are confirming your participation unless you mentioned otherwise.

OPTION 8 : CANCEL YOUR TOUR

Sadly this is your ultimate option. Our Northern Lights Photography Hunting Tour is one the rare aurora tours in Rovaniemi that allows for a flexible cancellation on the same day.

Our policy allows you to cancel your Northern Lights tour a few hours before (until 14.00, local time). You will then get your ticket refunded, minus a small cancellation fee of 25€/adult and 15€/child (which will cover the administrative and banking fees).

If you booked our Northern Lights Photography Hunting tour, please note that the guides need to prepare the tour, the route and their equipment, so after 14.00 (local time), we assume that you are confirming your participation unless you mentioned otherwise. If you decide to cancel, please send your request in writing with your booking number to info@nordicodyssey.net before that time. Refund will be proceeded within a few working days. The refund does not cover other options nor clothes rental fees (5€) because the equipment will be reserved for you. If you booked via reselling platforms such as TripAdvisor, the cancellation fees might be a bit higher due to prices applied by the third-party website.

That’s it! We hope that helps you make the best choice.
