Evening Reindeer Sleigh Ride

• Participants must arrive suitably dressed for cold winter weather. We recommend wearing warm clothing, comfortable hiking shoes or winter boots, gloves, and a hat. Dressing in layers will help you stay comfortable throughout the tour.
• The food and drinks mentioned in the tour description will be provided. However, we recommend bringing extra snacks and a bottle of water if needed. Please also eat well before your tour.

Reindeer have shaped transportation, livelihoods and traditions in Lapland for generations. During this experience, a local herder introduces you to the reindeer and leads your sleigh through the quiet, snow-covered forest. You will also learn about reindeer husbandry and the close relationship between the animals, their herders and Arctic nature. The gentle journey and personal cultural exchange offer a meaningful connection to Lapland beyond conventional sightseeing.

On our standard reindeer sleigh experiences, a professional reindeer herder leads the caravan and remains with the group throughout the journey. This is primarily for safety: reindeer are semi-wild animals, and the herder needs to manage the team and respond to the animals and trail conditions.

For guests, this also makes the experience much more comfortable and relaxing. The sleighs travel together in a caravan, so you still get the feeling of moving through the forest with the reindeer without having to concentrate on controlling the animal yourself. You can simply enjoy the silence, scenery and rhythm of the journey.

On some private tours or different sleigh ride options, it may be possible to let guests drive a sleigh themselves for part of the experience. However, this depends on the conditions, especially how much snow there is along the sides of the trail. Reindeer naturally prefer to stay on the main track, so sufficient soft snow beside the route is important if self-driving is to be done safely.

The forest setting away from Rovaniemi’s city lights gives you a genuine opportunity to see the Northern Lights during the experience. On clear nights with favourable aurora activity, the lights may appear above the snowy landscape, creating an unforgettable backdrop to your sleigh ride. As the aurora is a natural phenomenon, sightings cannot be guaranteed, but the peaceful, dark surroundings provide an excellent setting for watching the Arctic sky.

This experience takes place at a traditional reindeer farm in Rovaniemi region. The exact location is shared with confirmed guests. The one-way vehicle transfer from Rovaniemi to the activity starting point takes approximately 25 minutes. Round-trip transportation from Rovaniemi is included. This estimate refers only to the one-way journey by vehicle to the point where the activity begins. It does not include the activity itself.
