How many other participants will be on the tour?

This experience is operated in a small group, with a usual maximum of 8 participants.

At Nordic Odyssey, we deliberately keep our groups small and stay away from mass tourism. Even during peak season, we do not increase group sizes beyond our small-group philosophy.

Outside the busiest periods, the group may be smaller than the stated maximum. In some cases, your party may even be the only participants, making the experience effectively private.

A small tour group does not necessarily mean that every place visited will be private. Farms, museums and other public attractions may also welcome other visitors, especially during peak season.

If your party is larger than 8 participants, please contact us. We may be able to arrange a private option for a larger group.

How can I cancel my reservation for this tour?

We understand that travel plans can sometimes change. Although we hope everything goes smoothly, unexpected situations can happen, and we aim to make the cancellation process as clear and straightforward as possible.

The cancellation conditions for this experience are based on the tour operator's policy. A minimum cancellation fee of 10% applies to all customer cancellations to cover payment-processing and administrative costs. Where the tour operator's cancellation fee is higher, the higher fee applies.

Less than 1 day before departure: non-refundable.
Between 1 day and 7 days before departure: 50% cancellation fee.
Between 7 days and 365 days before departure: 10% cancellation fee.

How to request a cancellation

All cancellation requests must be submitted to us in writing. Please email info@nordicodyssey.net and include your booking reference number so that we can identify and process your reservation. The applicable cancellation fee is determined by the time we receive your written request.

Travel insurance

We strongly recommend taking out comprehensive travel insurance before your trip. Depending on the terms of your policy, insurance may cover cancellation costs caused by unexpected circumstances such as illness, an accident, a family emergency or another unforeseen event. Cancellation related to illness is commonly covered by suitable travel insurance, but coverage and required documentation vary between insurers, so please check your policy carefully.

What should I bring?

Participants must arrive suitably dressed for cold winter weather. We recommend wearing warm clothing, comfortable hiking shoes or winter boots, gloves, and a hat. Dressing in layers will help you stay comfortable throughout the tour.The food and drinks mentioned in the tour description will be provided. However, we recommend bringing extra snacks and a bottle of water. Please also eat well before your tour.

Question 6

Do I need previous skiing experience for Altai skiing? How are they different from cross-country skis?

Accepted Answer

No previous skiing experience is required. Altai skis are short, wide backcountry skis designed for traveling through deep, ungroomed snow. Their integrated climbing skins provide grip when moving uphill while still allowing you to glide across flatter terrain and gentle downhill sections. Unlike traditional cross-country skis, they do not require prepared tracks and are well suited to exploring forests, hills, and open wilderness. They can be thought of as sliding snowshoes, which is also the literal meaning of their Finnish name, liukulumikengät.

What makes this an Arctic expedition rather than a regular ski tour?

The experience introduces you to more than skiing. You will help prepare and pull an expedition sled, or pulka, learn what equipment is needed for winter travel and practise moving safely through Arctic conditions. The objective is to complete a longer wilderness journey and reach a panoramic destination rather than follow a short recreational loop. It is a one-day introduction to expedition travel, not an overnight or technical polar expedition.

How physically demanding is the expedition?

The expedition covers approximately 15 kilometres and involves several hours of movement through natural winter terrain. Participants should have good physical fitness and be comfortable with a full, active day outdoors.

Where does this tour take place, and how long is the transfer from Rovaniemi?

Accepted Answer

The activity location and route are selected according to the weather, snow and ice conditions, accessibility, daylight and safety, as well as the group’s interests, skills, fitness, mobility, previous experience and preferred level of challenge. When needed, the guide discusses the available options with participants before departure to select the most suitable plan. Once the activity begins, the selected activity area normally remains fixed, although the route, distance or pace may be adapted if conditions or the group’s needs change. The guide makes the final decision for safety and practical reasons. Travel from Rovaniemi is integrated into the experience, so there is no separate transfer time to an activity starting point. Round-trip transportation from Rovaniemi is included.
