Riisitunturi National Park is best known for its winter tykky trees, spruce trees encased in heavy layers of rime and snow. Tykky forms when supercooled fog droplets freeze onto branches and wet snow sticks to the frozen surface. Riisitunturi’s humid climate, freezing temperatures and elevated fell terrain favour this process, producing the rounded snow formations that make the park one of Finnish Lapland’s most distinctive winter destinations.

No. Both snowshoes and Altai skis are suitable for beginners. Your guide will show you how to use the equipment and select a route adapted to your experience and fitness level. Good general mobility is required because the tour takes place on natural, snow-covered terrain.

Choose snowshoes if you prefer a slower hike through varied forest terrain. They are easy for beginners to use and allow the group to explore uneven or hillier areas. Altai backcountry skis are wider than traditional cross-country skis and have integrated climbing skins for grip. They allow you to glide through deep snow and cover longer distances, although descents and steeper terrain can require more balance. No previous skiing experience is required, and your guide will recommend the most suitable equipment and route for your group.

Before the tour, our team will discuss your preferred activity, scenery, distance, and level of difficulty. Based on your wishes and the current conditions, we will recommend snowshoes or Altai skis and select a suitable route in the Rovaniemi area or farther into Lapland. During the experience, your guide can also adjust the pace and route to your group.

This tour takes place at Riisitunturi National Park in Posio, Finnish Lapland. Travel from Rovaniemi is integrated into the experience, so there is no separate transfer time to an activity starting point. Round-trip transportation from Rovaniemi is included.
