Alta

Located between the Altafjord and the vast Finnmark plateau, Alta is known as the City of the Northern Lights. Visitors can explore the Northern Lights Cathedral, Alta Museum and its UNESCO-listed rock carvings, as well as the region’s Sámi, Kven, and Norwegian traditions. Winter brings dog sledding, snowmobiling, skiing, and stays in an ice hotel, while summer offers hiking, cycling, fishing, and fjord excursions beneath the Midnight Sun.

Alta Airport is approximately five kilometers from the city centre, around a 10-minute journey by car, taxi, or bus. Regular flights connect Alta with Oslo, Tromsø, and other destinations in Northern Norway. Accessible throughout the year, the city is an excellent starting point for exploring Finnmark and the North Cape. Accommodation options include central hotels, cabins, wilderness lodges, aurora domes, and unique stays made from snow and ice.
